Too often, churches are guilty of posting life-less information on their social media. It’s usually with the sole purpose of communicating boring details like deadlines for the upcoming retreat, when the gym is open next, who people need to contact for the potluck, etc.
It’s not that churches don’t have anything better to talk about online, it’s just that they aren’t utilizing what they already have.
We spend so much of our time in preparation for Sunday morning services that we create a form of tunnel vision, not thinking about how we can repurpose that content to carry the inspiration and encouragement throughout the week.
The beauty of it is… you’ve done all the hard stuff.
All the content you need, can be found in the sermons, worship set-lists, lesson outlines, games, and discussion questions you have already created. You just have to dice up that content and translate it to your social media. If you pull your resources from all the ministries your church has (meaning youth ministry, children ministry, all adult ministries, etc.), then you’ll have more than enough and you’ll be celebrating more of the incredible things your church is doing.
Here are 5 examples of what I’m talking about…
- Pull tweet-sized quotes from the sermon.
During the services Sunday morning, take note of tweet-sized quotes (less than 140 characters) that capture a main theme or idea of the day. Share those throughout the week as a reminder of what Sunday morning was about.
You can also make the most out of your congregation, watching what they post in response to their Sunday morning experiences. Maybe even create a “top 10 list” of your favorite tweets from the congregation. If you pull all of your resources across all your ministries (think youth, college, and all adult ministries), you’ll find plenty of sharable content.
- Use pro-presenter or PowerPoint backgrounds as Instagram images.
All the prep work that your tech team does for a Sunday morning service can translate into social media fairly easily. One of the easiest would be taking images from ProPresenter or PowerPoint and using them on your Instagram. Make sure they are squared, that they include a short but powerful quote/idea, and add your logo to the bottom corner.
- Discussion questions for families.
Task your children’s ministry and youth ministry teams to create a few discussion questions that kids can take home after Sunday morning. It will help parents understand what their kids are learning at church. Then, use your social media channels to share those discussion questions again and ask how families responded to them. It will be a great chance for your congregation to share their thoughts while also helping your church celebrate what’s happening in your family units.
- Utilize surveys to collect ideas from the congregation and get them thinking about an upcoming event or series.
When done correctly, surveys can be a great way to involve your congregation while also equipping them with something very tangible to share or repost on their timeline. Surveys have the best responses when they are short, the questions are mostly multiple choice, and when they are user friendly. I love using Typeform for my surveys. They look clean, fun, and work seamlessly across all devices (PC, Macs, iPads, iPhones, Androids, etc.).
- Share the video/audio from Sunday morning.
This is low-hanging fruit but you might need to invest some finances to make sure you’re capturing good quality video/audio. Research some affordable camera options, empower tech-savvy adult and youth volunteers to be responsible for it, and share away. Besides just grabbing the entire sermon or service, be sure to grab a couple different video clips that are just 15-seconds to use on Instagram.
